We stood in the hall bathroom and the girls watched themselves in the mirrors while brushing their teeth. I brought up Val's birthday party, which was hastily scheduled for this weekend.

"What would you like for your birthday, Val?"

"Me want a new kitty for Daddy." We had just finished discussing how the only cat Daddy ever liked (Methylene) was gone, and that made Daddy sad. (But not as sad as Mommy!)

"Oh wow, that's really thoughtful of you. I don't think Daddy wants a kitty though. What else do you want for your birthday?"

Without missing a beat, "Me want a new sister!"

"Uh. Do you mean a different sister or another sister?"

Cheerfully, "Me want another sister, Mommy!"

"Um, well when you want more sisters or brothers you have to pray about it. God decides that."

Relentlessly, "OH, okay! Lets pray right now mommy!"

"Uh. OK. Go ahead."

She carefully balanced her toothbrush over the sink so she could fold her hands. "Dear God. Me want a new sister please very much thank you. Amen."

I was still thinking about whether or not it would be in my best interest to say "amen" when she asked me to turn on the water for her toothbrush.

  1. Wait, did I miss something? What happened to Methyl??

  2. Like mother, like daughter... :)Been there. Done that. With wonderful results!

  3. Hahaha!! You of all people know that prayer works :)
