For a few nights I'm back in the room I lived in all through-out college. I love this room and I love the double hung windows that open out onto the roof. I used to spend hours out on the roof talking to Superman on the phone. I also dragged a cushion up and laid out in the sun while reading a book or sleeping. I love the shape of this room, the sloped ceilings and low closet. I love falling asleep listening to the night sounds and tomorrow morning I'll probably wake up to the raucous noise of wild parrots. I love that this room is directly above the room with the grand piano in it and I especially love memories of falling asleep while listening to my grandpa play below.

Now I'm back with two little girls (my own!) in tow, both of them resisting sleep in their own ways. Now I don't use my hard-earned biology degree for anything except changing diapers and discussing birds and airplanes and dog poop.

My how times change.

  1. It was so good seeing you and the girls today. :) I hope you guys had a safe trip back up north!

  2. those were the days huh? Crazy how much things change over the years. your post made me remember how much i love hearing your grandpa play...

  3. I agree: vary well written, and thanks for sharing.

Enjoy your sweet memories, Becky; they're Beautiful. One day you'll be looking back to events of today, bird discussions, diapers and all, with equally sweet fondness. Thank God, beauty seems to have more mental lasting power than difficulty.

  5. This is a beautifully written post! You described the distinctive memories you have of the room so perfectly that I can almost picture it, not because you went into exhaustive detail but because you evoked a sense of the place so well. Very nicely done. :-)
